BART will end its mask mandate Sunday following the expiration of a two-month-old order that required masking in the system’s ticketed areas.
At its Thursday meeting, the agency’s Board of Directors did not extend the mask mandate, which had originally been imposed through Saturday. Instead, the board voted to authorize BART management to follow the lead of any relevant federal, state or county authorities that reinstate an indoor mask mandate, according to a BART press release.
The press release noted that management is also authorized to reimpose a mandate if any metropolitan area in the country experiences a surge in COVID-19 infections, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although masking will not be required in BART stations, free masks will continue to be available from station agent booths and BART police, the press release added.
